Reporting on my 2010 Sturgis run:

I had not been to the Sturgis, SD Motorcycle Rally in 40 years. This was the 70th Anniversary and the largest motorcycle gathering event in the world. Much bigger than the Daytona Bike Week event.

I left from Bakersfield, CA on August 8 on my Honda ST1300, all geared up and gear bags strapped down. I rode that Sunday and stopped for rest in Elko, Nevada. Temperatures had been around 95 degees. I left Elko, geared up for the hot weather. about 10AM and about 10 miles west of Wells, NV, the temps dropped to 42 degrees and snow flurries. Nothing stuck to the ground, only wet and careful riding. I then rode to Rawlins, Wyoming for the night. I rode the final leg to Rapid City, South Dakota on Tuesday.

I rode Wednesday on a personal, solo tour. I went to Hill City, SD and met up with a few thousand of fellow riders. I then rode to Custer, SD and met up with a few thousand of other fellow riders. Then on the the Crazy Horse Monument. I ended my solo day riding Custer State Park. What a joy to view the amazing sights and sites. My brother Bill made the ride from Apple Valley, MN and I joined him for Supper at Red Lobster.

Point of interest: It was estimated that 800,000 fellow riders would meet in Sturgis and surrounding areas over the two week event.

Thursday, we rode the Black Hills, Keystone and the Mount Rushmore National Monument, Lead, Deadwood, and Spearfish Canyon. What a joy of Mother Nature. Sights, sounds...mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Friday, we rode to Sturgis for the Official site of the Annual Sturgis Event. Stated was a gathering of hundreds of thousands of fellow riders. Pretty tame stuff as compared to previous events. Cellulite, sagging breasts, white hair, overweight bodies, and I'm referring to the men. Yikes.

Saturday, we left for our respective homes. I left Rapid and landed in Grand Junction, Colorado for rest. Unfortunately, after I had off-loaded my gear and headed for supper, as I entered the local European style round-a-bout a car tried to enter the same space I was already occupying. I took immediate evasive action and was forced into the center curb which caused my bike to lay down and pitched me off and to the ground, kind of like being bucked off a horse. After a police report and call to the insurance company I then rode back to the hotel and used their lighting and my tool bag to reassemble the bike for travel. Sunday, a swollen ankle, abrasions to the left hip and elbow. Sore as I have been in a long time. I made the decision to ride from Grand Junction, CO to Bakersfield (889 miles) in one step so I could be seen by my doctor here in Bakersfield monday morning. I completed the ride in 19 hours with many stops due to the 9 hours of heat between 104 and 114 degrees. As hot as I have ever been. My wife says I'm crazy (OK) and the bike needs to go (Not so fast). Let's not get too hasty here. Emailed my Dr. at 0030 (1230AM) and received a call from his nurse at 0730 to come in at 1000. The ankle is not broken, only badly sprained. The hip has superficial abrasions as well as the elbow. Now to handle the insurance company.

I am well and headed for a meeting in North Lake Tahoe on Friday. I'll stay off the ankle as best as I can. Tomorrow to mow the lawn...... I wonder what the Mrs. will say about that.............hahahaha.

All in all, it was an amazing ride (3993 Miles total) and an experience I will treasure for life. The mishap in Grand Junction aside.

Oh ya, I noticed this mornning that I have blistered palms and am saddle sore. Mending is on the agenda.

Proof, positive that in retirement and well over 60, you can still do it.
