Default Consolidation

I would like to get some input concerning maintenance consolidation of neighboring departments. The area that I am in has departments that all do their "own thing" on every level. Everyone goes in different directions and no one benefits. How do you convince the powers that be to give up their control for the greater good. From a tech standpoint, pooling resources to build, staff, and equip a central garage makes alot more sense than 10 different departments going in 10 different directions. Thanks for the input!

I'm sure mike will chime in on this.

One of the issues is priority. Every department feels their vehicle should have priority.

I'm assuming your example is 1 town with 10 dept heads. The only way you are going to get the dept heads to give up control of there maintenance and more importantly the maintenance budget is to start higher than the them. Convincing a city mgr is alot easier to lay out the numbers and show ways to save $$.

Steve were you thinking of me? Jeff, you are correct!! I Know of such a program that when started was great but then things went down hill. I think the problem was to many chiefs and only a couple indians and there was 4 or 5 departments in it. I thought at the time it was a excellant concept and maybe still is , just need the wright managers and large enough facility to hold cehicles espeacially when it is cold out. The comment on a couple indians, you need the techs there was probably at least a hundred vehicles and only 2 techs, I think that was to much per wrench, my opinopn. I know my deputy is talking with another department about doing some work and I am looking forward to that for the simple reason of hiring another tech, would be great to have some one in the shop with me.
Hope more posts pop up, look forward to reading.

Mike
