Cool Re: going out own your own

I did the owner/operator thing!
After 14 years of mobile and now shop service I can tell you, IT IS EASIER to work for someone else!! especially when you start hiring additional tech's.

The one BIG thing I can pass on is, it is easy to be a technician and think you can do it better and cheaper but to really manage a business is altogether something else.
Get the book "the E-Myth". Read it, then read it again and then decide if you still want to do it.
My shop started as a "part time" thing to help the local FD's and make a little extra on the side. I still work as a full time firefighter so I was not dependant on the income to keep me alive and going. Next thing I knew, I was working 6 days a week and had to hire help to keep up with demand. (don't hire firemen as part time help!! They work good when they need $ but quickly find other interest and call in) I have read several other books and and I think I did about 3/4 of the things I have done, WRONG.
I am too far into it now so, I have a lot of work to do to restructure the busines and make it system dependant and not GARY DEPENDANT!!
