OK, never had this happen before but was called out today cause F-350 would not move from park, now the guys have complained about it a couple times but I could never get it to do it myself. Well today I was called out cause it did it. To get it back to the shop I crawled under it and disconnected the cable from the trans and home bound we were. I get it into the shop and start looking around and can see a solenoid. I loosen the column and remove the solenoid that locks the shifter in place in park. I guess this is were I need tobe and am sure this is a OEM part only. I thought I would throw this out on the board to see what general thoughts are.
Can not wait to hear!! Mike

Mike, I haven't encounter that however if it has an electric solenoid on it I would check the brake light switch first and then the brake pedal linkage?

Mike,
What year? Tow a trailer? Park long periods with the hazards on? We see way more problems with switches and burned pigtails than anything else. Also the solenoid has power to lock it in park, no power to shift. So, If you turn the key just far enough to unlock the wheel, but not turn the ignition on, you can slip it into neutral (be sure your foot is on the brake) then start it neutral. You can drive back without having to crawl on the ground. If you can get it to act up, check the brake lights. If there are no lights, fix that problem, and you will probably take care of the shift problem also. Jim |

Check the wires at the stop light switch connector, they can break inside the insulation and may not be visable. Wiggle the harness near the switch with the brake peddle depressed. This is also a common problem with Crown Victoria Police Cruisers.

Thanks guys, got into the harness by brake switch all seems tight there, ordered a new switch should have in am, none around, how odd.
Jim the thing is a 04 ambulance built by McCoy Miller. I have found cut wires going to no were and am wondering if also that lock and let engine run device has something to do with it also. Mike

Cut that out and put a new light switch in, hope that does it. Oh called Sound Off who makes the thing and there is a wire that has something to do with the brake switch, wondering if that was the problem, but like I said it's gone, nobody uses that thing anyway!!

since we are in the middle of pothole season, we see alot of this.
driving around all day with a trailer of asphault, with the hazards on, and a driver with his foot on the brake while creeping along. lots of stress on switches and relays. |
